-

5.1 We believe that, although God created man morally upright, he was led astray from God’s Word and wisdom by the subtlety of Satan’s deceit,<ref><del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">1</ref> and chose to take what was forbidden</del>,<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline"><ref>2</ref> and thus declare his independence from, distrust for, and disobedience toward his all-good and gracious Creator. Thus, our first parents, by </del>this <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">sin</del>, <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">fell from their original innocence and communion with </del>God.<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline"><ref>3</ref> </del>

+

5.1 We believe that, although God created man morally upright, he was led astray from God’s Word and wisdom by the subtlety of Satan’s deceit,<ref><ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">See</ins>, this <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">alone I found</ins>, <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">that </ins>God <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes (Ecclesiastes 7:29)</ins>.

-

<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">5.2 We believe that, as </del>the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">head </del>of the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">human race, Adam’s fall became </del>the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">fall of all his posterity, in such a way that corruption, guilt, death, and condemnation belong properly to every person</del>.<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline"><ref>4</ref> All persons are thus corrupt by nature<ref>5</ref>enslaved </del>to <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">sin</del>,<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline"><ref>6</ref> and morally unable<ref>7</ref>to delight </del>in <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">God and overcome their own proud preference for </del>the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">fleeting pleasures of self-rule. </del>

+

<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Now </ins>the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">serpent was more crafty than any other beast </ins>of the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">field that </ins>the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Lord God had made</ins>. <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">He said </ins>to <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">the woman</ins>, <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">“Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree </ins>in the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">garden’” (Genesis 3:1)?</ins>

-

<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">5.3 We believe </del>God <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">has subjected </del>the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">creation to futility</del>,<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline"><ref>8</ref> and the entire human family </del>is <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">made justly liable to untold miseries of sickness</del>,<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline"><ref>9</ref> decay</del>,<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline"><ref>10</ref> calamity,<ref>11</ref> </del>and <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">loss</del>.<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline"><ref>12</ref> Thus all the adversity and suffering in the world is an echo and a witness of the exceedingly great evil of moral depravity in the heart of mankind; and every new day of life is a God-given, merciful reprieve from imminent judgment, pointing to repentance.<ref>13</ref> </del>

+

<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Then the Lord </ins>God <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">said to </ins>the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">woman</ins>, <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">“What </ins>is <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">this that you have done?” The woman said</ins>, <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">“The serpent deceived me</ins>, and <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">I ate” (Genesis 3:13)</ins>.

-

<<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">br</del>>

+

<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ (2 Corinthians 11:3).</ins><<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">/ref</ins>> <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">and chose to take what was forbidden,<ref>But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die (Genesis 2:17).</ins>

-

<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">[1] See</del>, <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">this alone I found</del>, that God <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">made man upright</del>, <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">but </del>they <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">have sought out many schemes </del>(<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Ecclesiastes 7</del>:<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">29</del>).

+

<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food</ins>, <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">and that it was a delight to the eyes</ins>, <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">and </ins>that <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate (Genesis 3:6).</ref> and thus declare his independence from, distrust for, and disobedience toward his all-good and gracious Creator. Thus, our first parents, by this sin, fell from their original innocence and communion with </ins>God<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">.<ref>Then the eyes of both were opened</ins>, <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">and </ins>they <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden </ins>(<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Genesis 3</ins>:<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">7-8</ins>).

-

<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Now </del>the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman</del>, <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">“Did God actually say</del>, <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’” </del>(<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Genesis 3</del>:<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">1</del>)<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">? </del>

+

<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Therefore, just as sin came into </ins>the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">world through one man</ins>, <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">and death through sin</ins>, <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">and so death spread to all men because all sinned </ins>(<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Romans 5</ins>:<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">12</ins>)<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">.</ins>

-

<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Then </del>the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Lord God said to </del>the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate” </del>(<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Genesis 3</del>:<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">13</del>).

+

<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">For as by a man came death, by a man has come also </ins>the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">resurrection of </ins>the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">dead </ins>(<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">1 Corinthians 15</ins>:<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">21</ins>).<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline"></ref> </ins>

-

<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">But I am afraid </del>that as the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">serpent deceived Eve by </del>his <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">cunning</del>, <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">your thoughts will be led astray from </del>a <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">sincere </del>and <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">pure devotion </del>to Christ (2 <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Corinthians 11</del>:3).

+

<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">5.2 We believe </ins>that<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">, </ins>as the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">head of the human race, Adam’s fall became the fall of all </ins>his <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">posterity</ins>, <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">in such </ins>a <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">way that corruption, guilt, death, </ins>and <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">condemnation belong properly </ins>to <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">every person.<ref>Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned- for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus </ins>Christ <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. If, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous </ins>(<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Romans 5:12-19).</ref> All persons are thus corrupt by nature<ref>In [sin] you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind (Ephesians </ins>2:<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">2-</ins>3<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">).</ref>enslaved to sin,<ref>Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? …When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness (Romans 6:16, 20).</ref> and morally unable<ref>The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14</ins>).

Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous (Romans 5:12-19).

[4] Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned- for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.
New page

{{info}}What We Believe About the Fall

''Man's Sin and Fall from Fellowship with God <br>''The Bethlehem Baptist Church Elder Affirmation of Faith, Part 5

5.1 We believe that, although God created man morally upright, he was led astray from God’s Word and wisdom by the subtlety of Satan’s deceit,1 and chose to take what was forbidden,2 and thus declare his independence from, distrust for, and disobedience toward his all-good and gracious Creator. Thus, our first parents, by this sin, fell from their original innocence and communion with God.3

5.2 We believe that, as the head of the human race, Adam’s fall became the fall of all his posterity, in such a way that corruption, guilt, death, and condemnation belong properly to every person.4 All persons are thus corrupt by nature5enslaved to sin,6 and morally unable7to delight in God and overcome their own proud preference for the fleeting pleasures of self-rule.

5.3 We believe God has subjected the creation to futility,8 and the entire human family is made justly liable to untold miseries of sickness,9 decay,10 calamity,11 and loss.12 Thus all the adversity and suffering in the world is an echo and a witness of the exceedingly great evil of moral depravity in the heart of mankind; and every new day of life is a God-given, merciful reprieve from imminent judgment, pointing to repentance.13

[1] See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes (Ecclesiastes 7:29).

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’” (Genesis 3:1)?

Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate” (Genesis 3:13).

But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ (2 Corinthians 11:3).

[2] But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die (Genesis 2:17).

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate (Genesis 3:6).

[3] Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden (Genesis 3:7-8).

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned (Romans 5:12).

For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead (1 Corinthians 15:21).

[4] Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned- for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous (Romans 5:12-19).

[5] In [sin] you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind (Ephesians 2:2-3).

[6] Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? …When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness (Romans 6:16, 20).

[7] The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14).

For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God (Romans 8:7-8).

But to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear (Deuteronomy 29:4).

[8] For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope (Romans 8:20).

[9] And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies (Romans 8:23).

[10] So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16).

[11] Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered” (Romans 8:35-36).

[12] But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13).

[13] Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance (Romans 2:4)?
